Mediterranean interior design in Estepona

Inside Villa Mare: Mediterranean Interior Design at Ikkil Bay Estepona

Some homes are designed to attract attention. Others are designed to make life feel different.

At Villa Mare, Mediterranean interior design in Estepona is expressed through natural materials, bespoke details and a quiet dialogue between architecture, light and the sea.

Set directly on the beachfront at Ikkil Bay, this elevated villa has been designed to make everyday life feel different: slower, calmer and continuously connected to the Mediterranean.

The interiors were conceived by Estela López, founder of Deco & Living. Her approach was not to impose a decorative language on the residence, but to listen to the architecture and reveal the character that was already there.

The result is a home defined by three qualities: warmth, serenity and beauty.

An interior design project that begins with the architecture

When Estela López first entered Villa Mare, the architecture and its relationship with the Mediterranean immediately shaped her vision for the project.

“The light and the sea are present from practically every room. My aim was for the interior design to accompany that feeling,” she explains.

This principle became the starting point for the entire residence. Rather than filling each room with statement furniture or decorative gestures, the design supports the natural qualities of the home: its generous proportions, visual continuity and constant connection with the exterior.

At Ikkil Bay, the concept of an elevated villa brings together the space and privacy of a detached home with the comfort and services of a private boutique development. Villa Mare’s interiors needed to express that same sense of scale.

Every element was therefore selected in response to the architecture. Furniture respects the openness of the rooms. Bespoke joinery subtly organises the different areas. Warm lighting softens the space as daylight fades. Nothing competes with the sea.

Mediterranean interior design in Estepona, without the clichés

Mediterranean interiors are often associated with a predictable visual vocabulary: blue accents, nautical motifs and overt references to coastal living.

Villa Mare takes a more subtle approach.

The aim was not to reproduce the landscape outside, but to extend its atmosphere into the home. Natural materials, organic textures, warm neutral tones and carefully controlled light convey the calm of the Mediterranean without relying on literal seaside references.

“We wanted anyone entering the home to slow down and feel the calm of the sea, but without using the traditional codes of a beach house,” says Estela.

The palette is deliberately restrained, allowing the changing daylight to shape the mood of the rooms. Soft creams, warm woods and tactile surfaces respond naturally to the brightness of Estepona and create an interior that feels serene without becoming cold or overly minimalist.

Large windows and open terraces strengthen this relationship between inside and outside. From the entrance hall to the living area, the eye is gradually drawn towards the horizon. The Mediterranean is not treated as a framed view at the end of the room; it becomes part of the interior composition.

Natural materials and bespoke details

The personality of Villa Mare emerges through a series of quiet, highly considered decisions. This approach to Mediterranean interior design in Estepona prioritises material quality, craftsmanship and the way each element responds to natural light.

One of its defining elements is the bespoke oak shelving in the hallway. Designed to create greater privacy around the bedroom area, it separates spaces without blocking the passage of light or interrupting the visual continuity of the home.

Its purpose is practical, but its presence is almost sculptural.

In the principal bedroom, a custom-made headboard performs a similar role. It creates a subtle division between the sleeping area and the dressing room while maintaining an open relationship between the different spaces. Most importantly, it allows the sea views to remain visible from the bed.

Walls and ceilings have been finished in lime mortar, introducing depth and a gently irregular texture. As the Mediterranean light changes throughout the day, the surface responds differently, giving the rooms a natural sense of movement.

These materials do not seek immediate attention. Their value becomes apparent through touch, light and daily use — an expression of luxury based on quality rather than display.

Interior design for an elevated villa

Designing the interiors of Villa Mare involved more than decorating a conventional luxury apartment. The residence had to convey the independence, privacy and generous scale associated with villa living.

This can be seen most clearly in the main living area.

From the entrance hall to the terrace, the different spaces follow one another with a natural sense of continuity. Bespoke furniture, lighting and carefully selected pieces create distinct areas without breaking the overall harmony of the home.

The living room summarises Estela López’s approach to interior design: coherent but never rigid, elegant but comfortable, and refined without feeling staged.

The relationship with the terrace is especially important. Rather than functioning as a separate outdoor space, it becomes another room of the home — one shaped by sea air, natural light and uninterrupted Mediterranean views.

It is this continuity that distinguishes Villa Mare from a conventional beachfront apartment and gives it the character of a villa suspended above the sea.

A luxury home designed to be lived in

A residence may be visually beautiful, but it only becomes a home when its design responds naturally to everyday life.

For Estela López, functionality and beauty are inseparable.

“A beautiful space that does not work eventually becomes uncomfortable. Creativity must always serve the way people live,” she explains.

This philosophy is particularly relevant in Villa Mare, which is presented fully furnished and ready to move into. Every decision — from the circulation between rooms to the lighting and bespoke storage — has been considered so that the home feels intuitive from the first day.

The interiors help visitors understand the proportions of the residence and imagine how each space might be lived in. They also remove much of the uncertainty usually associated with purchasing and furnishing a high-value home from abroad.

At Villa Mare, the architecture, furniture, lighting and materials already speak the same language. The new owner does not need to imagine its potential. The experience is complete and ready to be discovered.

Creating a timeless Mediterranean home

Trends change quickly, but the interiors of a prime residence must retain their relevance for many years.

Villa Mare achieves this through balanced proportions, natural materials, bespoke carpentry and a small number of distinctive pieces chosen for their design rather than their novelty.

There are no unnecessary decorative gestures and no single trend dominates the space. Instead, the interior is built around qualities that endure: craftsmanship, comfort, light and material integrity.

This makes the residence feel contemporary without being tied to a particular moment. It also leaves space for the personality of its future owner to emerge naturally over time.

A home that changes the pace of the day

Perhaps the most important quality of Villa Mare cannot be captured through a list of materials or specifications.

It is the way the home makes someone feel upon entering.

Estela describes the desired sensation simply: “I would like people to feel that the house welcomes them — that they belong there, even if it is their first visit.”

That feeling can be found in the warmth of the materials, the quiet transitions between rooms and the way the sea remains present without overwhelming the interior. Everything is designed to encourage a slower rhythm.

Villa Mare shows how thoughtful interior design can transform an exceptional property into something more personal. Not simply a completed beachfront residence, but a home with its own atmosphere and identity.

At Ikkil Bay, luxury is not defined by excess. It is found in natural light, carefully considered details and the feeling that every element belongs exactly where it is.
